HERITAGE

At Heritage Family Services we believe that we are all a product of our Heritage. Circumstances of our past, our culture, and the people we have interacted with develop us into the people that we are today. Understanding ones own heritage is an important part of Identity.

Our Heritage
In 1972 Hank Hubert and Ron Foss, were teamed up on Unit Three of the Youth Development Centre, an Alberta Provincial Government ‘Juvenile Delinquent Rehabilitation’ centre in Edmonton Alberta. These two Rehabilitation Counsellors began to talk about the possibility of running their own ‘Group Home’ and began to formulate, and eventually presented to the Government of Alberta, a proposal to develop such a facility in either Red Deer or Lethbridge. At the same time, the Government was planning to develop Youth Assessment Centres in both of these areas. Through a series of negotiations they were eventually given the opportunity to operate one of these facilities. Ron & Hank formed a company called F&H Residential and Assessment Services Ltd which was awarded a contract to operate the Youth Assessment Centre in Red Deer, Alberta. This facility initially functioned as a ‘Juvenile Detention Centre’ under the old Juvenile Delinquents Act. And so began a venture which is thriving today as Heritage Family Services Ltd.

Hank and Ron, together with Larry Plancke, a fellow worker from YDC, moved to Red Deer, hired four more staff, and began the operation of the Red Deer Youth Assessment Centre. Their first client was taken in on Halloween 1975. Within a short period of time they recognized the void of treatment options for youth from the Central Alberta area. The only treatment option available for Central Alberta youth was in Edmonton or Calgary. Hence a search began for a facility to house their first treatment centre. The task was not an easy one as both the City of Red Deer and the County of Red Deer were reluctant to approve zoning for a youth group home. The perception was there was no need for a facility of that nature because there were insufficient children in need of such services. After a few failed attempts to establish both a need and a facility Hank and Ron acquired an acreage just off Highway 11A west of Red Deer and located in the County of Lacombe. The Big Valley Boys Ranch became the first Youth Treatment Centre in Central Alberta. It was to become the first of many successful ventures initiated by F&H Child Care Services Ltd.

Over the years the company has grown into an industry leader in the provision of quality care.
Included in the company’s repertoire of successful ventures are:
  • Youth Assessment and Stabilization

In 1994 the company name was changed to Heritage Family Services Ltd. Ron Foss retired from the company in 1997 and it is now owned by Hank and Jay Hubert. Hank and Jay’s son Justin Hubert is the Company C.E.O. The company currently employs approximately 180 staff and cares for over 100 children on a daily basis.
